Working at height — access equipment

Suspended ceiling installation is carried out at height throughout the floor plate. The RAMS must specify the access equipment (typically mobile scaffold tower, podium steps, or hop-up platforms), confirm PASMA competence where towers are used, and describe the method of working progressively across the area to maintain safe access throughout installation.

Asbestos risk in existing buildings

In buildings constructed before 2000, the ceiling void may contain asbestos — in ceiling tiles themselves, pipe insulation, or on structural elements. The RAMS must confirm that an asbestos survey has been carried out, reviewed, and that the safe system of work addresses any asbestos-containing materials identified in or adjacent to the ceiling void. No disturbance of materials without confirmation of asbestos status.

Multi-trade coordination

Suspended ceiling installation in fit-out projects runs concurrently with M&E first-fix and second-fix. The RAMS must describe how ceiling trades are coordinated with HVAC, lighting, sprinkler head installation, data and fire alarm cabling — including who has priority access to the ceiling void at each stage, and how the ceiling is closed out after services are complete and snagged.

Fire-rated ceiling systems

Where the suspended ceiling forms part of a fire-rated assembly (protecting structure above or providing acoustic/fire separation), the system must be installed strictly to the manufacturer's tested specification. Any variation — including additional service penetrations — must be assessed against the fire performance specification and sealed with approved fire stopping.
