What Should a RAMS Include?
A RAMS should include a full hazard register with pre and post-control risk ratings, a method statement describing the safe working sequence, PPE requirements, plant and equipment lists, emergency arrangements, and a briefing sign-off record. The content must be site-specific — generic copy-paste RAMS are routinely rejected by principal contractors.
Full RAMS Checklist — 13 Standard Sections
- Project Details – Site name, address, client, principal contractor, document reference, version, and date
- Scope of Works – Specific description of the task being assessed — not a generic trade description
- People and Responsibilities – Named or role-based list: supervisor, competent person, first aider, and operatives
- Hazard Register – Each hazard identified, with pre-control likelihood (1–5) and severity (1–5), control measures listed, and post-control residual risk re-scored
- PPE Requirements – Specific PPE for this task with BS EN standard references where relevant
- Plant and Equipment – Equipment used, with LOLER/PUWER inspection references, operator competence certificates, and pre-use inspection requirements
- Substances (COSHH) – Hazardous substances used, with COSHH assessment reference number and key controls summarised
- Safe Sequence of Work – Chronological method statement: mobilisation, set-up, task execution, clean-up, and demobilisation
- Emergency Arrangements – First aid provision, emergency contacts, evacuation route, and any task-specific emergency procedure
- Environmental Controls – Waste disposal, noise and vibration limits, dust suppression, and pollution prevention measures
- Briefing and Sign-Off Record – Names and signatures of operatives who attended the RAMS briefing before work started
- Review and Version History – Prepared by, reviewed by, date of review, version number, and trigger for next review
- Quality Checks Before Issue – Pre-issue review against common rejection reasons: site-specific scope, non-identical pre/post risk scores, COSHH references present, method sequence sufficiently detailed
