TG20:21 vs bespoke design

Standard tube-and-fitting scaffolds within TG20:21 parameters can be erected without a specific structural calculation. Any scaffold outside TG20:21 parameters — unusually loaded, complex configuration, or tied to an unusual structure — requires a bespoke design by a scaffold engineer. The RAMS must state which regime applies and reference the relevant document.

Handover certificates

Before any scaffold is used, the erecting contractor must issue a handover certificate confirming the scaffold is erected to the design or TG20 standard and is safe for the stated loading. The RAMS must reference when the certificate is issued and to whom.

Scaffold inspections

Under NASC guidance and WAH 2005, scaffolds must be inspected: before first use, after any modification, after any event likely to affect stability (high winds, vehicle impact), and at least every 7 days. Inspections must be recorded. The RAMS must name the competent person responsible for inspections.

Ties and loading

Ties must not be removed or altered without the scaffold contractor’s authority. Loading bays must not be overloaded. The RAMS must state the maximum bay loading and include a prohibition on unauthorised alteration.

Exclusion zones

An exclusion zone must be established beneath the scaffold before and during erection and dismantling. Barriers and signage required. The RAMS must describe the zone size, barriers, and control of access.

• CISRS Basic Scaffold Card, Advanced Scaffold Card, or Scaffolding Manager card for operative grades
• NASC membership does not substitute for individual CISRS competence cards
• Scaffold supervisor must hold appropriate CISRS grade
