Electrical RAMS Guide for UK Contractors
An electrical RAMS must address the hazards of electrical installation and maintenance work — including contact with live conductors, safe isolation procedures, arc flash risk, concealed services, and trade-specific PPE. It must describe a safe sequence of work for the specific electrical task and site.
Key Topics in an Electrical RAMS
- Safe isolation and lock-off
- The RAMS must describe the isolation procedure in full: which circuit or distribution board is isolated, who carries it out, how the circuit is proved dead (GS38 two-pole voltage test: test tester, test circuit, test tester), and how the isolation point is secured with a lock-off device and personal danger tag.
- Concealed cables and services
- CAT/Genny scan before drilling or chasing. As-built drawings reviewed. No drilling without confirming cable-free zone. The RAMS must name who carries out the scan and what plans are consulted.
- Competence
- Reference to ECS card grade (approved electrician, qualified person) or JIB grade. For HV work, Duty Holder authorisation is required. The RAMS should name the site supervisor and their qualification.
- Testing and commissioning
- Live tests carried out only by competent persons with GS38 test equipment and appropriate PPE. Test results recorded. Sequence: insulation resistance, continuity, polarity, earth fault loop impedance, RCD testing.
- Emergency arrangements
- Electric shock response: do not touch casualty until supply is isolated; isolate at source; call emergency services; CPR only when safe. Named first aider with electric shock training. CO² or dry powder extinguisher for electrical fires only.
Common Electrical Hazards
- Contact with live conductors — safe isolation, lock-off, prove dead, GS38 test leads
- Silica dust from drilling masonry — wet drilling or dust extraction, RPE (FFP2) for extended periods
- Working at height for containment — podium steps or tower scaffold; no sustained work from ladders
- Manual handling — cable drums, distribution boards; mechanical aids and team lifts where required
