Crane Lifting RAMS Guide for UK Contractors

Crane lifting RAMS must address outrigger mats and ground bearing, lift radius and capacity, wind speed limits, banksman and signaller duties, and setup area exclusion zones. Crane collapse and dropped loads are catastrophic events — RAMS and lift plans must be treated as working documents, not paperwork exercises.

Key Topics in a Crane Lifting RAMS

Outrigger mats and ground bearing
Mobile crane outrigger loads can exceed 100 tonnes per pad in a confined footprint. Ground bearing capacity must be confirmed before crane setup. Outrigger mats spread the load; mat size must be calculated from the crane manufacturer’s data and confirmed against the site ground investigation. The RAMS must reference the ground bearing calculation and mat specification.
Lift radius and capacity
Crane capacity reduces with radius. The lift plan must confirm that at the maximum working radius for each lift, the crane is within its rated capacity with appropriate de-rating for wind, dynamic factors, and load attachment. The RAMS must reference the crane load chart and confirm the load does not exceed rated capacity at the planned radius.
Wind speed limits
Crane manufacturer’s maximum wind speed must not be exceeded. Wind speed must be monitored at the start of each working period and during operations. The RAMS must state the maximum permitted wind speed, the monitoring method (anemometer or Beaufort Scale), and who has authority to suspend operations.
Banksman and signaller
A trained banksman must guide the crane for all blind lifts and during setup, slewing to a new position, or working near overhead services. Communication method (hand signals, radio) must be agreed before the lift and stated in the RAMS. Only the banksman communicates with the crane operator during a lift — the RAMS must state this.
Overhead services
If working within three times the line voltage in metres from overhead power lines (or within the safe clearance zone for the voltage), a permit from the DNO is required. The RAMS must state the distance to any overhead line and the agreed safe system of work.
