Resin Flooring RAMS Guide for UK Contractors

Resin flooring RAMS must address isocyanate sensitisation, VOC and solvent COSHH, mandatory ventilation, ignition source management, curing time restrictions, and substrate preparation silica dust. Two-component polyurethane and epoxy systems present serious chemical hazards that require specific controls — not just generic COSHH statements.

Key Topics in a Resin Flooring RAMS

Isocyanate sensitisation
Many two-component polyurethane resin flooring systems contain isocyanates (MDI or HDI). Isocyanates are the leading cause of occupational asthma in UK construction. Once sensitised, a worker may react to exposures well below the WEL and may be permanently unable to work with isocyanates. The RAMS must identify whether the specific product contains isocyanates, require LEV or supplied air RPE (half-mask with A2P3 filter minimum for low-risk; powered air purifying respirator for higher exposure), and exclude sensitised workers from application areas.
VOCs and ventilation
Solvent-based resin systems release flammable and toxic vapours during application and curing. Ventilation is not optional — it is a mandatory control. The RAMS must specify: the ventilation rate required (from the product safety data sheet), how ventilation is achieved (forced air input and extract, not just opening a door), and that ventilation must be maintained throughout application and the initial curing period.
Ignition sources
Where solvent-based systems are used, the atmosphere during application may reach explosive limits. The RAMS must require: all ignition sources removed from the area before application (including electrical equipment not rated ATEX/IECEx for Zone 1), no-smoking enforced, and site-wide hot works suspension during the application period.
Substrate preparation and silica dust
Substrate preparation for resin flooring typically involves diamond grinding, shot-blasting, or acid etching. Diamond grinding and shot-blasting generate high levels of RCS. The RAMS must require: wet or vacuum-equipped grinding with OTE/LEV; no dry grinding without dust extraction; RPE (FFP3) as supplementary control; and health surveillance for regular operators.
Curing time exclusion
During and after application, the area must be fully excluded from all persons not directly involved in the work for the curing period specified in the product data sheet. The RAMS must state the product-specific exclusion period, the barrier and signage arrangements, and who authorises re-entry after curing.
