Example RAMS Document Walkthrough

This is an educational example only. The scenario used is fictional and intended to illustrate RAMS document structure. It does not constitute a ready-to-use RAMS for any real task. Any RAMS must be prepared and reviewed by a competent person with knowledge of the specific site, trade, and task before being issued or used to brief a workforce.

What This Walkthrough Covers

The walkthrough uses a fictional general building maintenance task to walk through nine sections of a RAMS document: project details, scope of works, people and responsibilities, hazard register, PPE and plant, method statement, emergency arrangements, briefing and sign-off, and version control. Each section is annotated to explain what makes it acceptable to a principal contractor reviewer.

Key Things the Example Illustrates

  • Site context defines the hazard list — The same trade in different site conditions produces a different RAMS
  • Specificity is what distinguishes a usable RAMS from a generic one — Controls must be actionable and matched to the scope
  • The method sequence must be logical and chronological — Gaps or inconsistencies signal that the work has not been genuinely planned
  • Emergency arrangements must be task-specific — Not just a phone number, but a procedure matched to the hazards present
  • A RAMS is a living document — It must be updated and rebriefed whenever conditions change
