AI RAMS Generator — Buyer’s Guide for UK Contractors
This guide helps UK contractors evaluate AI RAMS generator options — comparing templates, general AI tools (ChatGPT, Copilot), and purpose-built RAMS software. It covers the key questions to ask, the compliance requirements that apply regardless of tool, and where dedicated RAMS software adds the most value.
The Three Options
- Templates (Word, PDF)
- A blank or pre-filled document the contractor edits manually. Low cost, but heavily reliant on the contractor’s knowledge to fill in correctly. Generic templates are frequently rejected by principal contractors because they are not site-specific.
- General AI (ChatGPT, Copilot)
- A large language model that can generate plausible-sounding text. No access to a verified UK hazard database, no CDM 2015-aligned document structure, no risk scoring. May produce hazards or controls that are irrelevant, outdated, or missing entirely. Output requires significant review by a competent person.
- Purpose-built RAMS software
- A tool designed specifically to produce CDM 2015-aligned RAMS. Uses a structured UK hazard library, calculates pre/post-control risk scores from structured inputs, outputs a document with all required sections. RAMS AI is in this category.
Key Questions to Ask Before Buying
- Does it use a verified UK hazard library, or does it generate text from a general language model?
- Does it produce pre-control and post-control risk scores, or just list hazards?
- Can it produce a method statement that is site-specific, not just trade-specific?
- Does the output include all sections required by principal contractors: scope, hazard register, PPE, plant, COSHH, method statement, emergency arrangements, and briefing sign-off?
- Is there a competent person review step built in, or is human review an optional extra?
The Competent Person Requirement
Under CDM 2015, RAMS must be prepared and reviewed by a competent person. No AI tool removes this requirement. The competent person must review the output, identify site-specific hazards not captured by the system, and approve the document before it is issued. RAMS AI is designed to produce a structured starting point that is faster to review — not to replace human competence.
